Major Gifts Officer

Moment is seeking a dynamic, experienced Major Gifts Officer to work closely with Moment’s Editor-in-Chief and senior staff to increase major gifts to Moment and broaden its base of support.

Founded by Elie Wiesel and Leonard Fein in 1975, Moment’s mission is to promote the highest quality of journalism and thought in the belief that a range of voices and opinions is crucial for Jewish learning, combatting antisemitism, and for the civil discourse necessary for a healthy democracy.

Led by Editor-in-Chief Nadine Epstein since 2004, Moment has expanded from a legacy print publication to a multi-faceted, multi-media national community. Besides publishing six print and digital magazines a year, today’s Moment manages an award-winning website and produces topical digital newsletters, social media posts, and a popular virtual event series. Moment also carries out a number of projects including an antisemitism project that features a carefully fact-checked tracker and unique editorial content that, together, engage more than a million people annually.

Moment’s budget is $1.1 million and to date fundraising has been carried out by the Editor-in-Chief with the assistance of other staff members—all of whom have programmatic responsibilities as well.

Moment’s first Major Gift Officer will be a critical member of the staff, dedicated fulltime to fundraising, and will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and other staff to ensure Moment’s work is sustained for future generations.

Responsibilities:

Work with our list of approximately 5,000 donors and prospects who reside in communities across the U.S. and internationally

Work closely with Moment’s Editor-in-Chief and senior staff to design and implement appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

Manage relationships and secure support from individual donors and prospects of $5,000 – $10,000 or more with a focus on securing 5-7 figure gifts

Goals:

Secure $1 million in the first 18 months, thereafter $1 – 3 million per year

Meet with 15 prospects or major donors per month

Prepare 2-4 solicitation proposals per month for major gifts of $50,000 +

Qualifications:

Strong commitment to Moment’s mission and the ability to articulate the value of Moment’s work to prospective and current funders

Minimum of 6 years of increasingly responsible development experience in a nonprofit environment

A strong track record in major gift fundraising

Demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit and secure major gifts

Demonstrated ability to develop, foster and sustain successful donor relationships

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to work independently for long periods of time

Ability to work successfully with people at all levels within the organization, including board members, donors and volunteers

Ability to travel periodically

Knowledge of the Jewish community is a plus

Familiarity with SalesForce’s nonprofit version is also a plus.

The position is full-time, 40 hours/week with flexible hours. Moment is located in Washington DC. While we prefer for candidates to reside in the DC or New York metro areas, we will consider the possibility of working remotely with occasional trips to Washington DC.

Salary: $90,000-$150,000 a year commensurate with experience

Internships

Editorial Internships
Have a strong interest in Jewish politics, culture and religion? Love writing and editing? Want to learn the ins and outs of magazine production? Moment Magazine offers interns the opportunity to become a valuable part of our magazine. Interns work with various departments within the magazine, and are involved in many aspects of production, from fact-checking and researching articles to pitching stories. Administrative duties are also part of the internship; all interns may also provide assistance to all departments.

Editorial interns provide support to Moment’s editorial staff. Duties may include:

– Research for potential stories
– Providing support for editorial projects
– Web production and social media
– Copyediting, fact-checking and proofreading stories for the magazine
– Pitching and writing pieces for Moment’s website

Social Media Internship
The social media intern is responsible for assisting in a range of editorial and marketing initiatives. Their duties include writing social media copy, tracking analytics for social media campaigns, and creating social media posting schedules.

The social media intern will support the social media manager in developing and implementing promotional campaigns to boost website visits and increase engagement. Duties may include:

– Assist with the design and execution of social media campaigns
– Create weekly and monthly editorial calendars to promote editorial content on various social media platforms
– Create and distribute content such as infographics, videos and link previews on social media
– Track social media engagement to identify high-performing ideas and campaigns for scalability
–  Support marketing and events team at live and online events

All internships are offered in the spring (January through May), summer (June through August) and fall (September through December). Fall and spring interns work 16-24 hours/week (two or three full days) and may receive college credit (the internship is unpaid). Summer interns are expected to work 40 hours per week. Moment does not provide housing or travel assistance. Moment‘s office is in Washington, DC, though remote interns will also be considered.

Volunteers

Moment Magazine is seeking individuals eager to be part of a friendly, professional team that can help with a wide range of administrative and business-oriented tasks. Tasks include but are not limited to: 1) answering phones and taking messages; 2) filing correspondence in notebooks and file cabinets; 3) helping with occasional mailings; 4) helping with events. Computer literacy is a plus, especially with Word, Excel and any other programs including Filemaker.

Stimulating and friendly-office environment with many visitors and projects. Position has limited off-street parking and straight ride-on to major Metro buses. Tenleytown-AU metro stop is a 15 minute walk.
